Beware of New Year greetings: WhatsApp messages can wipe your bank account; Punjab Police explain threat and safety tips

PTC News Desk: If you receive a New Year greeting message on your mobile phone this New Year, click on it with caution. The cyber police has issued The Punjab Police cyber cell has issued an official public warning in this regard as such greetings can lead to your phone being hacked, which could allow hackers to access your data, bank accounts and even OTPs. 


According to officials of the police cyber cell, hackers are always on the lookout for opportunities when people receive bulk messages, and they take advantage of such occasions to send malicious messages. Amid a flood of messages, people often click on them unknowingly, which can result in their phones being hacked. The police have urged the public not to click on any message without proper verification and not to download any photos.


As per the Ludhiana cyber cell, hackers become particularly active whenever a festival approaches. During Diwali, many people received messages from hackers and several mobile phones were hacked. Keeping this in mind, the police have issued an advance warning ahead of the New Year.
