Chandigarh dentist abduction case : CBI files chargesheet against nine accused cops
The chargesheet reveals that the policemen first kidnapped Dr. Dhawan and later, when the investigation widened, they allegedly lost or destroyed their mobile phones to avoid being caught and to prevent electronic evidence from being recovered.
PTC News Desk: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against nine police personnel before a district court in Chandigarh in connection with the kidnapping case of prominent dentist Dr. Mohit Dhawan.
The chargesheet reveals that the policemen first kidnapped Dr. Dhawan and later, when the investigation widened, they allegedly lost or destroyed their mobile phones to avoid being caught and to prevent electronic evidence from being recovered.
The CBI clearly stated that the policemen intentionally destroyed or misplaced their phones in a bit to destroy evidence. Some claimed they dropped their phones while on a walk, while others said they lost them during cycling.
The investigation agency recovered only the phone of Constable Rinku Ram, which revealed details of a WhatsApp group where the alleged kidnapping conspiracy was hatched.

The investigation was transferred to CBI following Supreme Court's order. The High Court had directed Punjab Police to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. However, the administration challenged the order in the Supreme Court.
In August 2024, the Supreme Court modified the High Court’s order and handed over the investigation to the CBI instead of Punjab Police. Following this, the CBI registered an FIR against Inspector Sekhon and others on January 30, 2025.
