Goldy Brar’s parents sent to police custody till January 30 in extortion case
The case pertains to an alleged extortion demand of Rs 50 lakh made from a government school teacher of Udekaran village
PTC Web Desk: A court on Tuesday remanded the parents of gangster Goldy Brar to police custody till January 30 in connection with an extortion case registered last year in Muktsar district.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Neeraj Kumar Singla extended the police remand of Goldy Brar’s father, Shamsher Singh, and mother, Preetpal Kaur, after they were produced in court following the expiry of their earlier one-day remand.
The case pertains to an alleged extortion demand of Rs 50 lakh made from a government school teacher of Udekaran village, located on the outskirts of Muktsar. The police had registered an FIR against unidentified persons on December 3, 2024, following a complaint by the victim. During the course of investigation, the parents of Goldy Brar were subsequently named in the case and arrested from Amritsar.
They were first produced before the court on January 26, when the police were granted their custody for a day. On Tuesday, the court allowed further custodial interrogation till January 30.
The Muktsar district police confirmed that the arrests were made as part of an intensified drive against gangsters and their alleged support networks.
Station House Officer (SHO) of Sadar Muktsar police station, Sub-Inspector Darshan Singh, said the arrests were based on statements recorded from a resident of Udekaran village in the extortion case. He added that investigations were ongoing to establish the role of all those involved.
Shamsher Singh, a former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police, and his wife Preetpal Kaur are residents of Adesh Nagar on Kotkapura Road in Sri Muktsar Sahib, though the family originally hails from Faridkot district. Shamsher Singh was prematurely retired from service in 2021 after his alleged involvement surfaced in a murder case in Muktsar district.
Goldy Brar, who has been declared a proclaimed offender, is one of the key accused in the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in Mansa district. According to a public notice issued by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2024, Brar is suspected to be hiding either in Canada or the United States. He had reportedly travelled to Canada on a student visa in 2017.
Though earlier associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, Brar is believed to have parted ways with it last year. In 2024, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs designated him an “individual terrorist” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
