Gurdaspur cops deaths: Punjab Police arrest one, shoots dead another in encounter
ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard Ashok Kumar, who were posted at Adhian, about 2 km from the international border, were found dead inside the checkpost.
PTC News Desk: In a significant breakthrough, police have arrested one person and shot dead another in encounter in connection with the killings of two policemen in Gurdaspur near the Indo-Pak border.
The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Singh, who was shot in a police encounter near Purana Shala area after a brief chase. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.
Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police Aditya identified the one arrested as Dilawar Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur’s Alinangal village.
ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard Ashok Kumar, who were posted at Adhian, about 2 km from the international border, were found dead inside the checkpost. The sarpanch visited the check post at about 8.15 am and found both the ASI and the home guard dead with gunshot wounds.
Adhian, considered a sensitive and incident-prone village, has been adopted by the Border Security Force (BSF) under its “vibrant village” initiative. Despite this, the area remains vulnerable to cross-border smuggling of drugs and weapons, particularly after last year’s floods damaged stretches of border fencing.
The Ravi River, which changes course near the village before flowing into Pakistan, is frequently exploited by smugglers. The nearby town of Dorangla has also seen militant activity in the past, including routes linked to the 2016 Pathankot attack.
