PTC News Desk: In a tragic incident, a 15-year-old boy died by suicide after consuming poison in Punjab's Gurdaspur district after being upset over harsh punishment by school principal. He was a class 11 student of Cambridge International School.
The family of the boy bid teary-eyed farewell with symbolically placing a ceremonial sehra on his head during his last rites.
The deceased has been identified as Navjot, resident of Jhanda Lubana village in Kahnuwan, Gurdaspur.
He battled for three days for his life before passing away on Friday. The Punjab Police in Gurdaspur has registered an FIR against the school on charges of abetment to suicide.
The incident unfolded after the school principal punished navjot and his friend Harman after spotting them on first floor corridor of school leading him to take this tragic step over fear of embarassment after returning to school.
Navjot’s family said he felt deeply humiliated, especially as the incident happened in front of his classmates. He feared further embarrassment if he returned to school, which led him to consume a poisonous substance at home. He was admitted to a private hospital, where he died on May 1.
Another student alleged that such treatment is common in the school, with students frequently threatened with TCs over minor issues. He claimed that those wearing a “parna” or black turban are often singled out, made to stand aside, and humiliated.
DSP Kulwant Singh Mann said that based on the statement of Navjot’s mother, an FIR has been registered at Bhaini Mian Khan police station under Section 108 of the BNS (abetment of suicide). The matter is currently under detailed investigation.
