Phd scholar electrocution death: Panjab University to offer Rs 16 lakh aid, job to family member; SDO, XEN suspended

PTC News Desk: Day after a PhD scholar Jyoti died of electrocution at Panjab University, Chandigarh, the authorities after meeting the victim's family members announced a financial assistance of ₹16 lakh and a job to her brother.
Police said the family has agreed to a post-mortem examination.
Earlier, Jyoti, a resident of Haryana, was going to the department from her hostel and took an unpaved pathway due to the waterlogging caused by rainfall and came into the contact with an electric current, reportedly spread from a nearby electric junction box. She was immediately rushed to the hospital where doctors declared her dead.
Incident sparks protest
Jyoti's sudden death sparked protests at the university campus on Tuesday with students demanding Vice Chancellor's resignation and immediate action against those responsible for electricity maintenance.
The protesting students also demanded fair compensation for the victim's family and a rigorous time-bound investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile the Panjab University administration has offered Rs 16 lakh compensation to Jyoti's family and employment to her brother, who has passed 10 2 and possesses an ITI qualification.
Out of total financial assistance, a sum of ₹5 lakh will be given from the discretionary fund of the PU vice chancellor; and ₹11 lakh will be provided through the office of the Dean Student Welfare , officials said.
The university authorities also said that the entire university community stands in solidarity with the family during this difficult time and prays for eternal peace to the departed soul.

Jyoti was a scholar at Panjab University's Department of Microbiology. A resident of Rewari, Haryana, Jyoti came from a humble background with her father working as a small farmer and besides employed as a driver at a private school. Her mother is a homemaker.
