PTC Web Desk: In a significant development, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday dismissed the regular bail plea filed by suspended Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, who is currently lodged in Chandigarh Model Jail.

Bhullar had approached the High Court on January 9, seeking regular bail. In his plea, he argued that the investigation in the case had already been completed and the final report was submitted on December 3 last year. On this basis, he contended that there was no further requirement for custodial interrogation.

Through his counsel, Nikhil Ghai, the petitioner maintained that the prosecution intended to examine primarily official witnesses along with the complainant. He further submitted that since he had already been suspended from service, there was no reasonable possibility of him influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence.

The petition also pointed out that the complainant in the case had been granted protection under orders of the High Court. Bhullar claimed that the alleged trap operation related to a co-accused and did not involve any direct recovery or acceptance of money from him.

After considering the submissions, the Punjab and Haryana High Court declined to grant regular bail. Detailed reasons for the rejection are awaited.
