Punjab Assembly uproar: Ganieve Kaur Majithia corners govt, Speaker over anti-sacrilege law; SAD, Congress slam AAP over manhandling

PTC News Desk: The third day of the Punjab Assembly's Monsoon Session witnessed a stormy start with protests and sloganeering by the Opposition dominating the session. 

Congress MLAs entered the House raising slogans against the AAP government, day after opposition legislatures wore black scarves around their necks as mark of protest against alleged manhandling during recent proceedings

Meanwhile the Assembly also witnessed heated exchanges over the AAP government's proposed anti-sacrilege law. During zero-hour, Ganieve Kaur Majithia from Majitha constituency strongly criticised the government over the law and questioned that why amendments were not made to the "controversial clauses" in the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026.

Ganieve Kaur also raised objections over Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan's purported remarks calling 'sangat above the Guru' and alleged that the ruling party is challenging the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. 

"You are placing the Sangat above the Guru. Do you intend to challenge the Guru?" Ganieve Kaur Majithia said. 

"The Sangat comprisis people who remember and meditate on God's name. Those who recite Gurbani are the true Sangat. The people sitting in the Assembly are not the Guru's Sangat; here, we are MLAs and ministers. At the Akal Takht, we were among the Guru's Sangat, and we had said that we would make amendments. Have we now gone back on that promise? Sri Akal Takht Sahib had formed a committee, but no one consulted or spoke to it," She further added.

As the heated exchange continued, AAP MLAs stormed well and gathered to confront Akali Dal MLA, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the session until 10 am on Thursday.

The Speaker later directed that her comments be expunged from the official records of the House.

The uproar in the Assembly and subsequent confrontation with SAD MLA drew significant criticism cutting across the party line.

Criticism across party line 

SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal alleged that AAP ministers and MLAs threatened and passed derogatory remarks against Majithia MLA, accusing AAP leadership of equating themselves with 'sangat', demanding stringent action against them. 

"AAP ministers & MLAs stormed the Well to confront the Akali Dal MLA & even made disparaging remarks against her. The Shiromani Akali Dal demands strict action against all the guilty AAP leaders. Failing this we will take this issue to the people’s court & expose this anti-women govt which is striking at the respect of women in the Vidhan Sabha," Sukhbir Singh Badal said in a social media post.

Meanwhile Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal also criticised the incident while calling for strict action against the guilty leaders.

"Shocked at the behaviour meted out to my colleague Akali_Dal_ MLA

Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira also raised objection and accused the AAP government of suppressing the voice of opposition.
