Punjab heatwave intensifies: Temperatures cross 44°C, rain likely to bring relief soon
Punjab and Chandigarh face a severe heatwave with temperatures above 44°C. IMD issues yellow alert as rain and thunderstorms are expected from April 26, bringing possible relief
PTC Web Desk: A spell of intense heat has tightened its grip over Punjab and Chandigarh, pushing temperatures significantly above seasonal averages and affecting day-to-day life across the region.
Among the worst-hit areas, Bathinda and Faridkot recorded the highest daytime temperature at 44.3°C, while Chandigarh registered 41.0°C, about five degrees above normal and marginally higher than the previous day.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for April 25, cautioning residents about prevailing heatwave conditions in several districts along with warmer-than-usual nights.
Temperatures across most parts of the state have crossed the 40°C mark. Cities such as Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Rupnagar continue to experience rising mercury levels, while Chandigarh has been witnessing persistent heat both during the day and after sunset.
Authorities have advised people to limit outdoor exposure during peak hours and take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, as the current weather pattern is expected to persist for a few more days.
Heatwave warnings have been specifically issued for districts, including Moga, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Fazilka, Barnala, Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur and Patiala, where strong, dry winds are likely during daytime hours.
Adding to the discomfort, night temperatures have also remained elevated, hovering between 22°C and 26°C, above the normal range for this time of year. Cities like Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Ludhiana are likely to experience warm nights, offering little relief from the daytime heat.
While most districts have recorded temperatures above 40°C, a few areas such as Fazilka, Ferozepur and Hoshiarpur have seen slightly lower readings, ranging between 35°C and 40°C. The absence of rainfall so far has further intensified the heatwave conditions.
However, there is some respite on the horizon. Meteorologists have indicated that an approaching western disturbance, coupled with a weak cyclonic circulation over Haryana, could bring a shift in weather.
The weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall across several parts of Punjab between April 26 and April 30. Gusty winds and thunderstorms are also expected during this period.
On April 26, districts like Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda and Mansa may receive rainfall accompanied by winds of 30–40 kmph. Similar conditions are likely to extend to Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur on April 27.
By April 28, widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected across much of the state, which could provide partial relief from the ongoing heatwave.
