Punjab: Woman police constable, mother killed as car crashes and catches fire in Sangrur amid dense fog

PTC Web Desk:  A tragic road accident claimed the lives of a woman police constable and her mother in Sangrur district on Saturday after their car went out of control amid dense fog and caught fire following a collision with a tree.

The incident occurred in the early hours near the Sular Gharat area, close to the canal embankment road, between 3 am and 4 am. According to preliminary information, the car veered off the narrow stretch of road and rammed into a tree. Moments after the impact, the vehicle burst into flames.

The victims have been identified as 35-year-old Punjab Police constable Sarabjit Kaur and her mother, residents of Maura village in Sangrur district. Both were travelling together to visit relatives when the accident took place. The fire spread rapidly, completely gutting the car and leaving no chance of escape. Both women died on the spot after sustaining severe burn injuries.

Upon receiving information, police teams rushed to the spot and took the bodies into custody. An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the accident and the circumstances under which the vehicle caught fire.

Confirming the incident, Kamaldeep Singh, SHO of Dirba, said the accident occurred early in the morning and the car caught fire after hitting a tree, resulting in the deaths of both occupants. He added that further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, the incident has cast a pall of gloom over Maura village. The village sarpanch said the deceased woman was serving in the Punjab Police and her brother is also employed in the police force.

Dense fog was reported across several parts of Punjab on Saturday morning, leading to multiple accidents at different locations.
