Sangrur wedding food poisoning: At least 250 persons were reportedly taken ill after consuming food at a wedding function in Punjab’s Sangrur district. The health authorities has launched an investigation into suspected food poisoning.

The incident was reported from Moonak town, where the wedding ceremony was held at a local dharamshala on Tuesday afternoon. According to officials and local residents, guests who attended the event started experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach-related complications shortly after having the meal served at the function.

As the number of patients increased rapidly, several affected guests were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Moonak, while several others were admitted to private hospitals in Punjab and neighbouring Haryana, including medical facilities in Tohana of Fatehabad district.

As per information, the Moonak government hospital witnessed an overwhelming rush of patients, forcing medical staff to arrange mattresses on the floor after beds were fully occupied. Doctors and paramedical teams continued treatment through the night as more patients arrived.

The SMO, Moonak hospital, said 81 patients had reached the government hospital for treatment, out of which 61 were still admitted while several others had been discharged after initial care. Patients with serious complications were referred to higher medical centres.

Victims and their relatives alleged that the food served at the wedding function appeared to be contaminated. One of the patients claimed that nearly everyone who consumed the meal developed similar symptoms. Several families also raised concerns over inadequate arrangements at the local hospital due to the sudden surge in admissions.

Punjab Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal visited the hospital after receiving information about the incident. He reviewed the treatment arrangements and interacted with patients and their families.

The minister said medical teams from nearby areas, including Lehra, Sangrur, Bhawanigarh and Patiala, had been deployed to assist the local administration. He also directed civil and health officials to remain on round-the-clock duty and closely monitor the situation.

Authorities confirmed that food samples from the wedding venue have been collected and sent for laboratory examination to determine the exact cause of the illness.
