The BJP had accused widespread electoral misconduct in some polling stations in both constituencies, which fall under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, represented by TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee.
PTC News Desk: Voting is taking place on Saturday at 15 polling booths in two assembly constituencies in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, after the Election Commission of India ordered repolls due to reports of irregularities. An official said repolling is being conducted at 11 booths in Magrahat Paschim and four in Diamond Harbour. Voting started at 7 am and will continue until 6 pm.
The decision to hold repolls was based on reports from returning officers, observers, and other evidence, the official added.
“Polling was peaceful in the first hour. There has been no incident of violence or unrest. We have an adequate number of central forces in the two constituencies. Webcasting is also underway, and we are monitoring the proceedings,” the EC official said.
In Magrahat Paschim, TMC candidate Md Samim Ahamed Molla is contesting against BJP’s Goursundar Ghosh, along with Congress leader Abdul Majid Halder and ISF’s Abdul Aziz Al Hassan.
In Diamond Harbour, TMC’s Panna Lal Halder is facing BJP candidate Dipak Kumar Halder. Other contenders include Congress’s Goutam Bhattacharya and CPI(M)’s Samar Naiya.
The BJP had accused widespread electoral misconduct in some polling stations in both constituencies, which fall under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, represented by TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee.
To verify these claims, the Election Commission sent its special observer, Subrata Gupta, to assess the situation on the ground.
Meanwhile, a decision on whether to hold a repoll in Falta will be taken on Saturday.
The state elections in West Bengal were conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29 under tight security, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
