Punjab Vigilance arrests IAS officer Sanjay Popli for corruption

Chandigarh, June 21: The Punjab Vigilance on Monday evening arrested IAS officer Sanjay Popli on charges of corruption.


Sources said that the vigilance team also apprehended an accomplice of the IAS officer, who is a government official. According to the FIR, during the Congress rule, Popli allegedly demanded a 1% commission (Rs 7 lakh) from the contractor of a Rs 7-crore sewerage project in Nawanshahr. On January 12, the contractor paid Rs 3.5 lakh through Sanjeev Vats, a Superintendent-level official posted as secretary to the IAS officer.

The complainant allegedly made a video recording of it.


According to vigilance officials, Popli was demanding the remaining Rs 3.5 lakh from the contractor, who had taped his phone calls and filed a complaint with the anti-corruption helpline. The officer was apprehended at his Chandigarh residence in Sector 20. Sanjeev Vats, a co-accused, was apprehended in Jalandhar. Popli formerly served as head of the Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
