PTC Web Desk:  The police have arrested the suspect accused of murdering the wife of a non-resident Indian (NRI) nearly nine months ago. Identified as Vinod Kumar, a resident of Hoshiarpur district, the accused fled to Bangkok after committing the crime. He was arrested upon his return to India and was arrested at Kolkata Airport.

The victim, 43-year-old Ranjit Kaur, lived alone while her husband and two sons resided abroad. Ranjit Kaur had befriended Vinod Kumar through Facebook, and he frequently visited her in Payal. On September 4, 2023, Vinod Kumar travelled from Hoshiarpur to meet Ranjit Kaur, during which an argument ensued, leading to her tragic murder.

DSP Nikhil Garg said Vinod Kumar had prior cases registered against him for attempted murder, drug trafficking, and theft. In 2017, he had opened a travel agency and befriended Ranjit Kaur through Facebook. The suspect had ambitions to travel to Europe and had applied for visas from several countries, but his plans were thwarted by the issuance of a Look Out Circular (LOC) by the Khanna Police. His remand has been extended for four days as investigations continue.
