Neeru Bajwa halts ‘Thaapi’ screenings amid prevailing Punjab situation, extends support for Parvinder Jhota
Bajwa said her team had decided to suspend the film’s theatrical run, stressing that Punjab and its people matter more than the release of a film.
PTC News Desk: Punjabi actress Neeru Bajwa has announced that her film Thappi will no longer be screened in theatres from tomorrow. She said the decision was taken in support of the demand for justice in the case involving anti-drug activist Parvinder Jhota. The film was released on October 16, just two days ago.
In a Facebook post, Bajwa said her team had decided to suspend the film’s theatrical run, stressing that Punjab and its people matter more than the release of a film.
The actress said that everything she and her team had achieved was rooted in the spirit of Punjab and Punjabi identity. She explained that one of the main aims behind making Thappi was to bring renewed activity to the region.
Bajwa also emphasised that cinema exists for the people and should not take priority over their concerns. Referring to the current situation in Punjab, she said the team had decided to halt screenings because nothing was more important to them than the state and its people.
The announcement by the makers of Thappi comes amid growing demands for justice in the case involving Parvinder Jhota. Bajwa’s statement highlights the film team’s decision in the context of public concern surrounding the case.
However, the actress has not announced when the film will return to theatres. She said Thappi would remain off screens until the situation in Punjab improves.
