Deepfake row: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the virtual G20 Summit, emphasised the need for cautious development of artificial intelligence (AI) considering safety concerns and urged collective action by the Group of 20 (G20) nations to tackle this issue.

Addressing the summit, PM Modi stressed the importance of AI being developed with a focus on meeting the needs of the people while ensuring its safety within society. He highlighted the pressing concern posed by deepfake technology, asserting that AI must prioritise the public's safety.

The recent proliferation of deepfake videos targeting various public figures and social media influencers has raised apprehensions regarding the potential misuse of AI by malicious actors. AI's expansive integration across sectors continues to disrupt traditional business paradigms.

Meanwhile, on Diwali Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted concerns regarding the misuse of AI, particularly in the creation of deepfake videos, during a BJP Diwali event. He disclosed his directive to the ChatGPT team, urging the identification and warning issuance against the circulation of such fabricated content online.

Using a recent instance of a deepfake depicting him performing Garba, a traditional Gujarat dance, PM Modi emphasised the proliferation of such misleading videos. "There are numerous similar videos available online," he expressed to journalists at the Diwali Milan event in Delhi. The Prime Minister urged the media to educate the public about the authenticity of these fake visuals in the era of Artificial Intelligence, stressing responsible technology usage.

PM Modi's remarks come amid uproar over deepfake videos featuring altered faces of actors Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, and Kajol, igniting concerns about the potential misuse of AI to manipulate public figures. Several voices in the film industry, including veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, have advocated for legal action against such deceptive practices.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology recently issued an advisory to social media platforms, delineating the legal provisions and potential penalties for creating and disseminating deepfakes. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar asserted the online platforms' obligation to promptly remove reported misleading content, ensuring compliance with the IT Rules 2021 and striving for a secure digital space for Indians.

The government has stipulated severe consequences for the production and propagation of deepfakes, including a Rs 1 lakh fine and up to three years of imprisonment.
