Ramesh Bais takes oath as new Maharashtra governor

Mumbai, February 18: Maharashtra on Saturday gets its new 22nd Governor; Ramesh Bais took oath replacing Bhagat Singh Koshyari. 

Bais took oath in Marathi on Saturday, he was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court SV Gangapurwala at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. The state Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was also present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Koshyari, who served as the Maharashtra governor from September 2019, resigned last week after a controversial tenure. Koshyari (80), served the state for over three years and was recently replaced by Ramesh Bais (75) as the new governor of Maharashtra. Bias was the governor of Jharkhand, in whose place CP Radhakrishnan has been appointed. 

Previously, the President of India Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Bhagat Singh Koshyari who was serving as the then governor of Maharashtra. Ramesh Bais was then a Union Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government between 1999 and 2004. He was a seven-term member of parliament from Raipur Lok Sabha constituency in Chhattisgarh.

There was a series of controversies from the opposition who were after Koshyari. He then expressed and took the decision to step down from his position, it is also known that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai last month he had conveyed him the same. This was the second time the governor had expressed his willingness to quit the post.
