Powerful twin earthquakes jolts Venezuela, building collapses, high casualties feared; 32 killed

PTC News Desk: At least 32 people were killed while several others injured after a powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, causing buildings to crack and electricity to flicker. Before people could understand what was happening and find safety, a second, even stronger 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit the capital city, Caracas, just 39 seconds later, creating widespread panic.

At least three people were killed in the Baruta area of Caracas, according to the municipality's mayor. At Venezuela's Simon Bolivar International Airport, part of the roof collapsed, filling the terminal with smoke and dust. Videos show frightened passengers rushing out with their luggage as the building shook and lights flickered. Some people took shelter under a food counter inside the airport.

Footage from the coastal city of La Guaira showed dust hanging in the air, empty streets, and damaged buildings after the quakes.

The strength of the earthquakes, described as some of the most powerful to hit Venezuela in over 100 years, can be seen in videos from inside homes. In one clip, a vase falls onto a table, a wall-mounted television shakes violently, and a nearby couch moves back and forth due to the strong tremors.
