PTC News Desk: At least two explosions were reported near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying in Damascus, Syria, on Tuesday, according to security sources.

Macron is visiting Syria on an official trip, marking the first visit by a Western European head of state since the fall of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in 2024.

According to the French presidency, Macron did not hear the explosions and continued with his scheduled meetings. He later met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus.

Witnesses reported hearing explosions near the hotel and seeing smoke rising from the area. Emergency vehicles quickly arrived at the scene, roads were temporarily closed, and security was tightened around the site.

Sources said one explosive device was reportedly placed in a dumpster, while another was hidden in a vehicle parked near the Four Seasons Hotel Damascus, where Macron was staying.

The Elysee Palace said the blasts were not audible from the presidential convoy and did not affect Macron's movements.

Videos circulating on social media showed a vehicle near the hotel on fire, with thick smoke rising into the air. Emergency responders were seen working to extinguish the flames as security forces secured the area.

Macron's visit comes at a time of major changes in the Middle East, following recent regional tensions and the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
