Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament 2018: Belgium wins shoot out after 2-2 draw
In the farewell edition of the elite tournament it had launched, Pakistan went down fighting the shoot out battle to finish sixth and last in the 37th Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament at Breda on Sunday.
The Pakistan-Belgium game had ended in a 2-2 draw thanks to a last minute penalty corner conversion by Arshad Tofeeq.
In the shootout Belgium scored twice against one by Pakistan.
It was Air Marshal Our Khan, the then President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation who suggested holding of Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament in 1973. Now the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has decided to discontinue this tournament as a number of new tournaments, including World Hockey League and World Super Series have been introduced.
Pakistan, lost five of six matches it played here. The only win, a shock win, was over the Olympic champions Argentina in the last round robin game.
Playing under new coach Roeland Oltmans, Pakistan were hoping for a better finish.
In the classification game, Shan Ali gave Pakistan the lead in the 16th minute with a penalty corner conversion. Tom Boon scored from a penalty stroke in the 27th minute to bring the teams at par before Florent van Aubel put the Belgians ahead with a brilliant field goal in the 34th minute.
Pakistan, however, pulled one back in the last minute with a penalty corner conversion by Arshad Tofeeq. Luck, however, eluded Pakistan in the shootout as it went down 1-2.
