Chandigarh school accident: 1 dead, another loses hand
Chandigarh, July 9: A total of 19 students and a female attendant (40 years) were reported injured during this incident. It is unfortunate to mention that one student (16years) was immediately rushed to PGIMER wherein she was declared brought dead as 250 yr-old-tree falls inside the Carmel Convent School complex in Sector 9 on Friday.
Meanwhile, a woman attendant of the private school, who sustained injuries, has been put on ventilator, while the left hand of one of the students had to be amputated to save her life, officials said.
In a major breakthrough, Punjab government orders District Education Officer to raze diseased, old or perilous trees in school premises.

In addition, a student, Sejal suffered a serious spinal cord injury. Her surgery is also being planned. At the same time, the condition of Sheila, a female servant, remains critical.
After the death of Hirakshi, 16, in Chandigarh's Sector-9 Carmel Convent School after the fall of the Chandigarh administration's 'heritage tree', people are angry and questioning the administration's action. People are demanding action from the administration by posting pictures of such dangerous trees on social media in other parts of the city.
An update on the three patients admitted in PGI after being injured in the incident of Carmel Convent school sector 9 Chandigarh is as under :
1. First patient, 15 yrs old student, has undergone amputation of left arm above elbow due to her severe crush injury. At present her vitals are stable and she has been kept in recovery itself for further treatment and observation.
2. Second patient, 16 yrs old student, is in NSx ward. Her vitals are stable and is conscious. She is having a fracture at level L1&L2 ,and is kept under observation for further management
3. Third patient, ,40 yrs old female, has been admitted in ATC ICU. She is having M5 status. She has head injury and is critical . At present she is on ventilator support.
Meanwhile, police lodged an FIR under Section 336 (act to endanger human life or personal safety), and 304A (death due to negligence) of the IPC against unidentified persons and the Chandigarh administration ordered a magisterial probe.
The incident took place at 11.25 am, minutes before the recess break was to end. Most of the students were having lunch when the nearly 75-ft-tall tree came crashing down trapping several of them.
Police and fire department officials reached the spot within 10 minutes, an official said, adding the injured were taken to government multi-speciality hospital in Sector 16 and to PGIMER, while some were taken to Fortis hospital in Mohali.
The incident took place when children were out for a lunch break.

Meanwhile, several political leaders expressed grief and concern on the accident.
