Retired havildar kills sister-in-law with axe at her home in Mohali village, arrested
PTC Web Desk: A 70-year-old woman was killed with an axe at her home in Mamupur village near Gharuan in Mohali. The police have arrested her brother-in-law, a retired havildar who is reportedly mentally unstable.
The woman has been identified as Karnail Kaur. The accused is 67-year-old Mohkam Singh, who left the police force about seven years ago. The axe used in the crime has been recovered, the police said.
The case was registered at the Kharar Sadar police station on a complaint by Karnail Kaur’s son, Hartej Singh. He said Mohkam lived in a shed near their house and kept buffaloes close to his fields in the village.
According to Hartej, his uncle turned up at their door around 2 am carrying an axe. The family was scared and did not open the door. His mother was sleeping in a separate room and she opened the door of her own room. Mohkam then struck her on the head, fracturing her skull, Hartej told the police.
Hartej said he called Mohkam’s son, Manjot Singh, and told him what had happened. Manjot and his brother, Gurkirat Singh, rushed to the spot and caught their father. They also threw away the axe.
With help from some cousins, the family tied Mohkam up, locked him in a room and called the police.
Sub-Inspector Balwinder Singh said the police have not yet found any revenge motive or family dispute behind the killing. A murder case has been registered and the accused is in custody. The investigation is still on.
The police have not officially said anything about the accused’s mental condition and the claim comes from reports.
