Delhi's air quality plunges into 'severe' category day after Diwali

Delhi Air Pollution: Day after Diwali, air pollution has shot up in the national capital as the air quality in Delhi-NCR plunged into the 'severe' category with Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 421 on Sunday morning. According to the latest estimates updated by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), PM2.5 has become the lead pollutant instead of PM10 as a characteristic of wintertime. According to SAFAR estimates updated at 6 am, the air quality in Delhi University, Pusa Road, Lodhi Road, Mathura Road, IIT-Delhi, Indira Gandhi International Airport (Terminal-3), and Ayanagar was recorded in the 'severe' category with an Air Quality Index of 479, 433, 392, 427, 398, 468 and 424, respectively. As per the report, the AQI between the range of 51 and 100 is said to be 'satisfactory' or 'very good' while 101-200 falls under 'moderate', 201-300 remains in 'poor' category, 300-400 under 'very poor' and 401-500 falls under the 'hazardous' category. On Saturday, Diwali, the SAFAR predicted air quality in the national capital to be much better as compared to the last 4 years around the Diwali period. Meanwhile, on Sunday morning, both Noida and Gurugram recorded AQI in the 'severe' category with AQI of 465 and 376, respectively. Earlier, in an order to battle Delhi's air pollution, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a complete ban on the sale and bursting of all firecrackers in Delhi-NCR from midnight of November 9 till November 30. -PTC News
