Delhi NCR rains: Floodwater enters homes as Yamuna swells, Gurugram schools and offices shut
PTC News Desk: The national capital is facing a flood threat as Yama crossed the danger mark on Monday after continuous rainfall, with water starting to enter residential colonies and forcing people to shift to relief camps.
At 6 am, the river’s water level was recorded at 205.68 metres -- above the danger mark of 205.33 metres. Officials warned the level could swell further to around 206.50 metres by 5 pm.
Officials said that large amounts of water are being discharged every hour from Haryana’s Hathnikund barrage, raising the threat of flooding in Delhi’s low-lying areas, for which alerts have been issued.
The District Magistrate of Shahdara announced that traffic and pedestrian movement on the Loha Pul would be halted from 5 pm on Tuesday as the Yamuna’s water level continued to rise.
In Gurugram, daily life was badly hit on Monday after heavy rainfall led to severe waterlogging and long traffic jams. The city recorded over 100 mm of rain between 3 pm and 7 pm, prompting authorities to issue an orange alert for heavy to very heavy showers on September 2.
