Water level in Yamuna river crosses danger mark, over 10,000 evacuated in Delhi
PTC News Desk: The Yamuna river swollen by heavy rains has crossed the danger mark as the water level at the Old Railway Bridge – which is representative of the city – stood at 206.3 metres, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC).
The development has prompted the authorities to sound flood warnings and expedite evacuations along the bank.
The danger mark for the national capital stands at 205.33 metres and evacuation starts once the water level crosses 206 metres.
Apart from the heavy downpour, high volumes of water are being released from the Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages every hour. The river received a discharge of 1.62 lakh cusecs from Hathnikund Barrage and 1.38 lakh cusecs from Wazirabad Barrage at 8 am.
The continuous surge in the water level poses significant threat for the people in low-lying areas, which are prone to floods and other water-borne diseases. As a precautionary measure, most of these residents are being relocated to safer areas.
With flow at Hathnikund still high on Tuesday, officials warned that the Yamuna in Delhi is unlikely to recede before Thursday.
