The initial figures released by the State Information Commission are any indication , then ongoing panchayat elections are going to be the a farce of its kind on the democratic process.

In a letter shot to the SEC, SAD senior vice president and former minister Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema has pointed out that only 9700 aspirants have filed nomination for the post of village sarpanches for 13726 such posts – one for each village.
“ Evidently, for hundreds of village sarchpanch posts, there are no takers” he quipped adding that there is practically no competition for the coveted post of villatge headman in highly politicized state of Panjab.

The situation is far worse in case of election of sarpanches. For nearly 85 000 odd posts, there are only 27,000 aspirants in the fray. Obviously, at least two third posts are no takers.

Dr. Cheema avers that such figures can’t be taken on the face value but everything is possible in bizarre would of Punjab politics and polls being conducted by the SEC.
In his short and crisp letter, Dr. Cheema has urged the SEC to immediately release the correct figures to dispel all myths emanating from the scenario. Strangeley, the above mentioned figures have been published in all leading newspapers from SEC sources and seems credible.
