Punjab and Haryana High Court orders fresh CBFC review of Punjabi film Chardikala
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has instructed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to expedite the certification process for the Punjabi film Chardikala. The court has ordered the board to constitute a revising committee within seven days and ensure that a final decision on the film's certification is taken within the following seven days.
The direction came while hearing a petition filed by the film's production house, MAD4FILMS, which alleged that the certification process had been kept pending for an unreasonably long period, delaying the movie's release in India.
According to the petition, Chardikala was released in international markets on May 29, 2026, but has not yet received the required CBFC certificate for its Indian release. The producers argued that despite completing the necessary formalities, the film has remained stuck in the certification process.
During the proceedings, MAD4FILMS informed the court that the CBFC had expressed concerns that certain content in the film could have implications for law and order in Punjab. The matter was subsequently referred to the revising committee. However, the producers claimed that the committee had not convened, effectively preventing any decision on the film's certification and delaying its domestic release.
Seeking judicial intervention, the production company requested the High Court to direct the CBFC to complete the certification process without further delay so that the film could be released in Indian theatres.
Chardikala stars Ammy Virk and Rupi Gill in lead roles. The film is reportedly based on a sensitive subject linked to Sikh history and sentiments, which is believed to have prompted the objections raised during the certification process.
