Former Punjab minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot moves HC; files bail plea in graft case

Chandigarh, August 4: Former Punjab Forest Minister and Congress leader Sadhu Singh Dharamsot has moved Punjab and Haryana High Court and filed a bail plea in the graft case, sources informed on Thursday.


Notably, a Mohali Court had previously rejected the former minister's bail plea.

The Case

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested senior Congress leader and former minister, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, in a corruption case in June. Dharamsot had served as minister for the forest and social welfare department in the cabinet of former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Along with him, a local journalist, Kamaljit Singh, who was allegedly working as an aide, was also arrested.

Dharamsot is accused of being involved in the illegal felling of over 25,000 trees. The Congress leader was allegedly involved in "organised corruption" in relation to the issuance of no-objection certificates, the transfer of government employees, and the awarding of permits for the cutting of Khair trees. He has been booked under charges of the prevention of corruption act for misdeeds as minister.
