Happy Birthday Hema Malini: The actress-turned politician is celebrating her 71st birthday on Wednesday. Hema who is also a dancer, writer, director and producer, made her debut with the Tamil film, Ithu Sathiyam.

She ventured into the Hindi film industry with Sapno Ka Saudagar in 1968, in which she essayed the lead role. This was the beginning of an illustrious career spanning numerous films opposite the titans of the film industry like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna and Dev Anand. She is best known as ‘Dream Girl’ after she starred in a 1977 film by the same name.

With her ethereal looks, versatility and brilliant dance skills, she became a larger than life figure. She was one of the finest and highest-paid actresses from 1976 to 1980. During her career, she bagged 11 nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and won the award in 1973. She won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and also the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour awarded by the Government of India in 2000.

In 2013, she received the NTR National Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh for her contribution to Indian cinema. From 2003 to 2009, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha as a representative of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2014, she was elected to the Lok Sabha. In 2019, Hema retained her Mathura seat, which she won by defeating RLD candidate Kunwar Narendra Singh by a huge margin of 2,93,471 votes. She is a life member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
