PTC Web Desk:  The United Kingdom has unveiled a tougher set of immigration measures aimed at curbing rising migrant numbers, including new English language test requirements for visa applicants from countries such as India.

Beginning January 8, 2026, all skilled worker visa applicants will be required to take a Secure English Language Test (SELT) conducted by a Home Office-approved provider. The test will assess speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities, with applicants expected to demonstrate proficiency equivalent to A-Level or Class 12 (Level B2).

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood defended the move, emphasising the importance of linguistic integration. “If you come to this country, you must learn our language and play your part,” she said, noting that migrants should be able to contribute meaningfully to national life.

The new policy, part of the government’s ‘Immigration White Paper’, also introduces significant reforms for international students. From January 1, 2027, the duration for finding a job under the Graduate Route visa, a popular option for Indian students, will be reduced from two years to 18 months. However, PhD graduates will continue to enjoy a three-year stay permit.

According to Home Office Minister Mike Tapp, the adjustment aims to ensure that foreign graduates transition into suitable graduate-level roles and contribute effectively to the UK economy.

Additionally, the maintenance fund requirement for student visas will rise for the 2025–26 academic year. Students will now need to show £1,529 per month in London (up from £1,483) and £1,171 elsewhere in the UK (up from £1,136) to prove financial readiness.

Employers hiring overseas talent will also face higher costs as the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) increases by 32%. Small or charitable organisations will pay £480 per employee per year, while medium and large companies will pay £1,320. The Home Office said the increase, the first since 2017, will help invest more in the domestic workforce.

Further reforms include doubling the number of universities eligible for the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa route and capping annual entries at 8,000. The UK also plans to enhance opportunities for top global researchers, designers, and innovators under the Global Talent and Innovator Founder routes.

In a separate move, nationals of Botswana will now require visas for all UK visits due to increased asylum misuse cases since 2022.
