1984 Sikh Massacre: CBI court acquits Sajjan Kumar, two others of allegations of rioting, murder
1984 Sikh Massacre: Rouse Avenue Court has acquitted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar and two others in a case of rioting and murder during the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots.
This case relates to the murder of Surjeet Singh in the Sultanpuri area in November 1984.
Geetanjali Goel, a special CBI judge, acquitted Sajjan Kumar, Brahamanand Gupta, and Ved Prakash on Wednesday.
The CBI had opened an investigation into this matter. The agency had submitted a charge sheet under charges such as rioting, murder, arson, promoting enmity between communities etc.
The Government of India set the Justice Nanavati Commission of Inquiry in the year 2000 to investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.
After considering the report of the Commission, the Ministry of Home Affairs (Government of India) directed the CBI to probe the case against the then-member of Parliament and others.
Sajjan Kumar was represented by Anil Kumar Sharma and SA Hashmi. They claimed that no evidence was presented against the accused. It was an entirely new case with no evidence.
They also claimed that all cases relating to the Sultan Puri killings had been investigated and tried.
Surjeet Singh's case was closed with a report. The statement of prosecution witness Joginder was also recorded, however, he did not mention Sajjan Kumar's name.
The CBI again investigated the case and filed a charge sheet against Sajjan Kumar and other accused persons.
