28-year-old Air India Express pilot dies of cardiac arrest; DGCA’s fatigue norms under scrutiny

PTC Web Desk: A young Air India Express pilot, aged 28 and recently married, tragically passed away due to a cardiac arrest. The sudden demise has left his colleagues and the aviation community in shock.

Air India Express issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss, saying, “We deeply regret the passing of a valued team member due to a medical condition. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family during this difficult time. We are extending every possible support to them as we grieve this tremendous loss together.”

The airline also urged the public and media to refrain from unnecessary speculation, adding, “We kindly request everyone to respect the family’s privacy. We are fully cooperating with relevant authorities as they carry out their procedures.”

This incident comes amid growing concerns over pilot health and fatigue in the Indian aviation sector. In February, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) proposed a phased implementation of revised duty and rest regulations for pilots in response to concerns about excessive work hours.

According to information, the DGCA’s roadmap includes increasing weekly rest periods for pilots from 36 to 48 hours starting July 1, 2025, and gradually reducing night flying duties by November 1, 2025. These changes aim to minimise fatigue and enhance safety for both aircrew and passengers.

The Delhi High Court, on February 24, had directed the DGCA to strictly follow the proposed timeline. Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju was informed that of the 22 revised clauses in the Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR), 15 will be implemented from July 1, 2025, with the rest scheduled by November 1.

Pilot associations had petitioned the court to ensure these changes are not delayed. Responding to this, DGCA’s counsel assured the court that the authority stands by the commitments made in its affidavit, suggesting that the petitions be considered resolved as timelines are now in place.
