32-year-old-woman found dead five months after marriage, family alleges murder by husband
PTC News Desk: A 32-year-old-woman was found dead at her residence in Lucknow, just five months after she got married to a Merchant Navy officer. The post-mortem report has confirmed that the death was caused by hanging.
The deceased woman has been identified as Madhu Singh, whose husband Anurag Singh alleged that she died by suicide while her family has claimed that he had been torturing her over dowry and had murdered her.
The accused, Anurag Singh, has been arrested, and police are questioning him to get to the bottom of the tragedy.
Madhu got married to Anurag on February 25 this year after connecting on matrimonial site. Her family alleged that Anurag, who used to work at a Hong-Kong based ship management firm demanded Rs 15 lakh as dowry.
The family also shared Whatsapp chats showing Anurag insisting upon Rs 15 lakh and the family's reluctance to pay such huge amount while able to manage up to only Rs 5 lakh. Madhu's father, Fateh Bahadur Singh, stated in his complaint to the police that Anurag called repeatedly after the wedding and pressed for dowry.
The famiy further said that merely a month after the wedding, Madhu returned to her parent's home after Anurag assaulted him for the first time. Her father then paid the dowry asked for and Anurag took her back, but the torture continued, the bereaved father has said in his complaint.
Madhu's sister Priya says she was a lively person, but Anurag did not want her to talk to anyone. "He did not want her to have a social life; he would ask her not to talk to her friends or with us. We would speak only when he was out of town. He hit for absolutely no reason, such as keeping a plate where he did not want her to keep it. He pressured her to drink with him," she said.
Madhu's father in his complaint also alleged that after his daughter got pregnant, Anurag forced her to undergo abortion as he was having an extramarrital affair and he had also spent a night with her in a hotel in the city. Madhu had read chats between Anurag and his ex-girlfriend on his phone and shared them with her.
During the interrogation, Anurag maintained that Madhu died by suicide, however remained mum on asking the possible cause behind pushing her towards such a drastic step. He has been booked for charges related to cruelty and under the Dowry Prohibition Act according to Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
