4 students killed in stampede during concert at Kerala University; know what led to tragedy
Kerala University stampede: A stampede at a university in Kochi killed four students and injured at least 64 others. The incident occurred on Saturday at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), and four of the injured students are in critical condition, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George.
The campus was hosting a tech fest, and singer Nikhita Gandhi was performing in an open-air auditorium.
According to reports, entry was restricted to those with passes, but the situation changed when it began to rain. People waiting outside rushed into the auditorium for cover, causing a stampede in which some students slipped and fell.
The fact that the same gate was used for entry and exit, according to Municipal Councillor Pramod, contributed to the stampede.
"Exit and entrance through the same gate contributed to the stampede. Students were attempting to enter via the same gate. Students entering through the steep steps were the first to fall, and the huge crowd at the gate stomped on them repeatedly," he said.
On Saturday, an emergency ministerial meeting was convened at the government guest house in Kozhikode, presided over by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The ministers expressed their condolences, and it was decided that all celebratory and artistic events planned for Sunday as part of the CPM's outreach program, Nava Kerala Sadas, would be cancelled in light of the tragedy.
At least 64 students are being treated at various hospitals for injuries. George stated that two boys and two girls were brought dead at Kochi's Kalamassery Medical College.
"This is extremely unfortunate news. 46 people were brought to the Kalamassery medical college with injuries. Four were brought dead, of which two were boys and two were girls. The condition of four is critical. Two of them are in a private hospital and the other two are undergoing treatment at a government hospital," the health minister stated.
