AIIMS Delhi: Meet the world’s youngest girl to undergo awake brain surgery

AIIMS Delhi: A five-year-old girl at AIIMS Delhi underwent an awake craniotomy utilizing the Conscious Sedation technique for a left perisylvian intraaxial brain tumor and become the youngest girl in the world to undergo the groundbreaking procedure involving brain surgery while the patient is conscious, allowing surgeons to interact with them during the operation to ensure critical brain functions are preserved.

With her remarkable cooperation throughout the surgery and remained in good condition both at the conclusion of the procedure and in the postoperative period, five-year-old earned the distinction of being the youngest girl globally to undergo surgery. 

Apart from the cooperation by the girl, there was excellent teamwork and support by neuro anesthesia and Neuroradiology teams for providing high-quality functional MRI brain studies. 

Awake brain surgery, also known as awake craniotomy, is a medical procedure in which a patient remains conscious and alert during the surgical intervention. During the surgery, the neurosurgeon performs cortical mapping to identify vital areas, called the "eloquent brain", that should not be disturbed while removing the tumor.

Awake brain surgery allows real-time feedback from the patient, enhancing the precision of the procedure and reducing the risk of complications.
