Punjab Women’s Commission takes suo motu notice of nine missing girls in Ludhiana, seeks report by June 8

PTC Web Desk: The Punjab State Women’s Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of reports regarding nine girls who were reported missing in Ludhiana within a span of 48 hours and has sought a detailed status report from the city police by June 8.

In a notice issued today, Commission Chairperson Raj Lalli Gill said the matter had come to the Commission’s attention through media reports and discussions on social media platforms. Considering the seriousness of the issue, the Commission has initiated action under the provisions of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001.


The notice, addressed to Ludhiana Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, seeks comprehensive details regarding the action taken by the police and the progress made in tracing the missing girls.

Citing Section 12 of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001, the Commission stated that it is empowered to take suo motu notice of cases involving the safety, dignity and rights of women and girls.

"The Commission views such matters with utmost seriousness and remains committed to safeguarding the rights, dignity and security of women in Punjab," the notice stated.

The Commission has directed the police authorities to submit a detailed report on the investigation by June 8, 2026, for further review and consideration.

The notice further instructed officials to forward the action-taken report to the Commission through the designated email channels within the stipulated timeline.

The development comes amid growing public concern over the reported disappearance of nine girls in Ludhiana in a short period, raising questions about child safety and security in the region.

Officials of the Women’s Commission said the matter would remain under close scrutiny until a detailed account of the investigation is received from the police authorities.

Meanwhile, the Ludhiana Police continue efforts to trace the missing girls and ascertain the circumstances surrounding the cases
