Banks announce nationwide strike for three days from September 28: What customers need to know ?

PTC News Desk: Bank customers may get an additional day to complete important transactions before the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike begins on September 28.

Banks are already scheduled to remain closed on September 26 due to the fourth Saturday and on September 27 because of Sunday. This could have resulted in banking services being affected for five days in a row.

To avoid this, the government has decided that all Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will remain open on Sunday, September 27, according to the Finance Ministry.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the opening of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on that day. Customers can therefore use Sunday to complete essential banking work before the strike.

The Finance Ministry said customer convenience remains a top priority. The government and bank managements have also appealed to the unions to call off or postpone the proposed strike and have taken steps to keep essential banking services running.

Why are bank employees have announced strike

The strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which says it represents around 90% of bank employees.

The main demand is the introduction of a five-day banking week.

A meeting between UFBU representatives and the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner was held on Tuesday to discuss the issue, but no agreement was reached.

After the meeting, UFBU said it would consider postponing the strike if there is a concrete and positive development towards implementing the five-day banking system.

Other demands

Apart from five-day banking, the unions are also demanding:

Revision and improvement of pension benefits

A uniform dearness allowance formula for all pensioners

An option for employees covered under the National Pension System (NPS) to shift to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS)
