Bengaluru: Man arrested for filming women and sharing videos, photos online without consent
PTC News Desk: A 26-year-old man was arrested by Bengaluru police allegedly for sharing voyeuristic photos and videos of women on social media without their consent.
The suspect, identified as Gurdeep Singh, a hotel management graduate currently unemployed, was arrested at his residence in KR Puram area of Bengaluru.
The incident came to fore after a woman flagged concerns on Instagram about a social media page that posted videos of women filmed without their consent in popular areas of the city like Church Street, Koramangala and other such spots.
Calling out the account in a video she posted on Instagram, the woman wrote in the caption: “This person walks around Church Street pretending to film the ‘chaos’, but in reality, all they do is follow women and record them without their consent.”
The woman further claimed that the account which has over 10k followers showcased street scenes and actually stalked and secretly filmed women. While calling it a serious breach of privacy, she emphasised that that being in a public place or having a public Instagram profile does not mean consent to be filmed.
In her post, she said, "This person walks around Church Street pretending to film the 'chaos' - but in reality, all they do is follow women and record them without their consent. It happened to me. And I'm sure many others have no idea they've been filmed too. Just because my account is public doesn't mean I consent to be filmed publicly. That is not how consent works.
Following her complaint, Bengaluru Police arrested Gurudeep Singh, 26, identified as the person behind the account.
According to the police, efforts to pull down the Instagram account have been intricated owing to social media platform's internal policies. The polie said that fhey are further considering judicial intervention to compel Meta, Instagram's parent company, to take down the account.
