Bengaluru witnessed highest number of acid attacks against women in 2022: NCRB report

PTC News Desk: Bengaluru had the highest number of acid attacks against women in the country in 2022, with the city police registering eight cases, according to most recent National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report.

According to the data, Bengaluru topped the overall list of the 19 metropolitan cities listed in the NCRB data, with eight women being victims of acid attacks last year. The data showed that Delhi was second, with seven women becoming victims of acid attacks in 2022, and Ahmedabad was third, with five such cases registered.

Meanwhile, metropolitan cities such as Hyderabad and Ahmedabad recorded two such attempted attacks in 2022.

One of the prominent acid attack cases that shook Bengaluru last year was that of a 24-year-old M.Com graduate who was attacked on her way to work on April 28. The accused had been stalking the woman for several years, according to police.

He approached her for marriage, and when she declined, he splashed acid on her. Later in May, the man was apprehended at Tiruvannamalai Ashram, where he was allegedly hiding as a "Swami." The victim was offered a contract job at Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's secretariat in June 2023.

On June 10, 2022, another similar case was reported in which a man allegedly threw acid in the face of his female friend after she declined his marriage proposal.
