Cash at residence row: Centre mulls impeachment move against Justice Yashwant Varma
PTC News Desk: The Union government is likely to bring impeachment motion in the upcoming monsoon session against former Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma following his indictment by the Supreme Court appointed probe panel after the discovery of a huge sum of burnt cash from his official residence in the national capital.
According to the reports, the move comes in the backdrop of Justice Varma's indictment following recovery of unaccounted cash at his residence. Justice Varma who was repatriated to the Allahabad High Court from Delhi High Court was asked to resign, however he refused to do so. He was transferred out on March 20 and he took oath as judge at the Allahabad High Court on April 5 but he has not been assigned work.
The then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna had written to the president and the prime minister, recommending his impeachment. Khanna sent the letter after an in-house inquiry panel constituted by the apex court indicted Varma, though its findings were not made public.
Varma has claimed innocence, denying any link to the cash that was discovered following a fire at his outhouse.
Notably, the union government is also considering to take opposition parties into confidence before moving impeachment motion against Justive Varma who faced massive backlash across the party line.
