Centre's big announcement: Caste-based enumeration to be included in upcoming census

PTC Web Desk: In a landmark decision with far-reaching socio-political implications, the Union Government has officially confirmed that caste-based enumeration will be included in the upcoming decadal census. The move marks a significant policy shift and aims to bring greater transparency and inclusivity to India's population data.

The announcement came after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, addressing the media, emphasised that the inclusion of caste data in the national census reflects the government's commitment to social equity and transparency.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the Cabinet Committee has resolved to integrate caste enumeration into the next census. This decision highlights our dedication to the interests of every section of society,” said Vaishnaw.

The minister also noted that the government has earlier implemented policies like the 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) without disrupting existing social balances, reinforcing its ability to introduce reforms with sensitivity.

This decision arrives ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, where demands for a nationwide caste census have gained significant political traction. The move is expected to resonate in states like Bihar, where regional parties, including the BJP's ally Janata Dal United (JDU), have already conducted independent caste-based surveys.

Criticising opposition-ruled states for conducting fragmented caste surveys, Vaishnaw stressed the importance of a standardised, nationwide approach.

“To preserve the nation’s social harmony, caste data should be collected as part of an official and transparent census process rather than through politically motivated surveys,” he said.

According to the minister, conducting the enumeration in a structured, uniform manner will help strengthen the country’s socio-economic planning framework while avoiding confusion and division.

Two More Major Decisions by Modi Cabinet

High-Speed Corridor from Shillong to Silchar (Meghalaya–Assam):

A high-speed corridor will be built from Shillong to Silchar. It will be 166-km and have 6 lanes. It will serve as a part of the North-East infrastructure network. The project will cost Rs 8,640 crore across 22 stretches.

Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of Sugarcane for 2025-26:

The government has fixed the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for the year 2025–26. The price has been set at Rs 355 per quintal for sugarcane with a standard recovery rate. This will be the minimum price—no purchases can be made below this rate.
