Chennai metro chaos: Train stuck in subway, commuters forced to walk through tunnel

PTC News Desk: For passengers traveling on Chennai Metro’s Blue Line on Tuesday morning, the day started with an unexpected disruption. A technical problem caused a Metro train to halt inside an underground tunnel, forcing commuters to walk nearly 500 meters along the tracks to reach the nearest station.

According to passengers, the power went off as soon as the train stopped. Videos shared online show people standing inside the dark train, looking out and holding the handrails, trying to figure out what had happened.

The Walk-Out: After around ten minutes, an announcement directed passengers to get off the train and walk through the tunnel to High Court Station, about 500 meters away.

Walking the Tracks & Service Restoration: Online videos showed long lines of commuters carefully walking along the dim tunnel beside the tracks. The stoppage was likely caused by a power failure or a major technical fault.

Officials’ Update: Chennai Metro Rail Limited later confirmed that services had been restored.

CMRL said in a statement: “Metro train services between Airport and Wimco Nagar Depot on the Blue Line are running normally again. Services on the Green Line between Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro and St Thomas Mount are also operating as usual.”

The message ended with: “We regret the inconvenience caused.”
