Cold wave grips north India, Delhi records season's coldest day
PTC News Desk: The Met Office forecasts a continued cold spell across north India, with anticipations of rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in the southern region.
Delhi registered its coldest day of the winter season as the minimum temperature plummeted to 5.3°C, marking the capital's lowest maximum temperature in two years at a chilly 13.4°C. Issuing a "yellow alert," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) foresees similar frigid conditions on Wednesday, projecting a maximum temperature around 16°C. The western disturbance's influence led to sporadic drizzles in parts of the northern plains and certain areas within the city. Despite this, Delhi's air quality remained at a "very poor" level, measuring 343 on the air quality index.
Neighbouring Uttar Pradesh experienced even colder temperatures, with Kanpur and Agra recording minimums below freezing point, reaching 1.1°C and 1.0°C, respectively.
The night shelters in Delhi serve as a sanctuary for the homeless population enduring the harsh cold. These shelters provide essential amenities like blankets, beds, hot water, and meals to those seeking refuge. Caretakers at shelters such as the one in Delhi's Anand Vihar mentioned that, apart from offering warmth and necessities, their rescue teams actively bring individuals from roadsides to these shelters, ensuring safety amidst the biting cold.
