The exchange took place during the 139th birth anniversary celebration of Dr Shri Krishna Singh in Patna. According to reports from the event, a person in the audience said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not leave power, prompting Mallikarjun Kharge to respond sharply.
He then questioned PM Modi’s promise to bring back black money, asking, “I want to ask, where is that money?” Kharge accused the Prime Minister of repeatedly making false promises and failing to deliver on his commitments.
“PM Modi has a habit of telling lies. He had said that he would bring back black money in his first 100 days. I want to ask, where is that money?” Kharge asked.
Kharge slams RSS ideology
Kharge also criticised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), claiming that its ideology was responsible for communal tensions in the country.
He said that there would be no peace in India as long as the RSS ideology continued to exist.
Kharge further accused the RSS and the BJP of supporting views that go against the Constitution, particularly on the issue of untouchability. He alleged that some people associated with the two organisations continued to hold beliefs that were contrary to constitutional values.
BJP hits back
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised Kharge after his remark went viral on social media.
BJP spokesperson Tuhin A Sinha wrote on X that Kharge’s behaviour showed the Congress was becoming increasingly frustrated. He also accused the party of trying to create disorder through protests.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh, a BJP Lok Sabha MP from Bihar, also took a swipe at Kharge. “I used to think only Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, was foolish. Now it seems there is a whole group of them,” he said.
Giriraj Singh claimed that Modi, who turned 76 in September, would remain in power for at least another 30 years. He added that the people of India would give the Congress and the Nehru-Gandhi family a strong response for Kharge’s remark about the Prime Minister’s father.
