Delhi airport scare: Six injured as SWISS flight catches fire during takeoff after engine fail
PTC News Desk: Six passengers were injured on a SWISS flight at Delhi airport after the aircraft had to stop its takeoff due to an engine fire, officials said. The injured were taken to the hospital.
All passengers were safely evacuated on the runway using emergency slides. The flight was scheduled to travel from Delhi to Zurich.
Flight LX147, operated by Swiss International Air Lines, was an Airbus A330. It had just started its takeoff run at around 1:08 am when one of its engines failed and caught fire. For a few passengers who couldn’t use the emergency slides, stairs were arranged.
The airline said it is helping passengers with new bookings or hotel stays. It also said a technical team will come to Delhi to inspect the aircraft and find out what caused the incident.
"We are aware of an incident involving flight LX147 in Delhi. The aircraft involved is an Airbus A330, registration HB-JHK. SWISS has established a task force. There were 228 passengers and four infants on board," SWISS said in a statement.
"Shortly after takeoff, just after 1 am local time in India, an issue occurred with one of the engines. The crew rejected the takeoff and, following an assessment of the situation, decided as a precaution to evacuate the aircraft. Six passengers currently receiving medical attention, crew unharmed," the airline said.
