PTC Web Desk:  In a tragic incident, two schoolboys lost their lives after drowning in a canal in Punjab’s Mansa district on Saturday. The teenagers had left home for school but reportedly went to the canal instead.

The deceased have been identified as 16-year-old Gurvinder Singh from village Dhaipai and 15-year-old Sukhpreet Singh from Bhikhi. Both were Class 10 students at a private school and were known to be close friends.

According to family members, the boys left their homes around 10 am, telling their parents they were heading to school. However, they later went to the canal to bathe amid the rising temperatures.

After some time, information about the drowning reached their families. Villagers rushed to the spot, while the police were also informed. Local divers were pressed into service to search for the boys.

Following several hours of effort, both bodies were recovered from a point some distance away from where they had reportedly entered the water.

The deaths have left both families in deep shock. It is learnt that each of the boys was the only child of their parents.

The bodies have been shifted to the mortuary of the Civil Hospital in Mansa for post-mortem examinations.
