PTC News Desk: Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel on Thursday informed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal that he has decided to retire from electoral politics due to his advancing age.

In the letter, Ram Niwas Goel, 76, thanked all party leaders for their respect.

In response to the letter, Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP's supremo and former Delhi chief minister, said Ram Niwas Goel's decision to leave electoral politics was "an emotional moment."

“His guidance has shown us the right direction inside and outside the House for years. Due to his increasing age and health, he had recently expressed his desire to leave electoral politics just a few days ago. We respect his decision. Goel sahab was, is and will always be the guardian of our family. The party will always need his experience and services in the future too,” Kejriwal said on X.

Ram Niwas Goel has been the Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly since 2015. As an MLA, he represents Delhi's Shahdara Assembly constituency.

Ram Niwas Goel beat Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jitender Singh Shunty by 11,731 votes in the 2015 Delhi Assembly election. He first ran for office in 1993 as a BJP candidate, and he won.

The Seventh Delhi Legislative Assembly finished its five-year tenure on Wednesday, with the 74th and last session before the impending elections in February 2025.

When addressing the House, Speaker Ram Niwas Goel described the occasion as "emotional and historic."
