Delhi excise policy scam: BRS leader K Kavitha's interim bail plea dismissed by court

PTC News Desk: Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court has refused the interim bail plea filed by Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha in connection to a money laundering case linked with the defunct Delhi excise policy.

This decision came on Monday, as the court dismissed K Kavitha's plea regarding interim bail in the aforementioned case. Kavitha's plea for regular bail is still awaiting a hearing, which is scheduled for April 20.

K Kavitha was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) from her residence in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, on March 15, concerning the money laundering charges. She stands accused of being a significant figure in the "South Group," allegedly involved in paying kickbacks amounting to Rs 100 crore to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi in exchange for a considerable portion of liquor licenses in the national capital. Following her arrest, she was remanded to 14-day judicial custody.

This recent development follows K Kavitha's appeal to a Delhi court, where she sought to revoke the order permitting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to interrogate her in Tihar jail. The CBI is conducting an investigation into the corruption aspect of the excise policy case.

During the court proceedings, Kavitha's counsel, Nitesh Rana, contended that the CBI had circumvented the proper legal procedures by seeking permission to interrogate her without her knowledge. Expressing concerns, Rana suggested that the CBI might not have presented all the facts accurately to secure a favourable ruling. The court took note of these arguments and deferred the matter to April 10, allowing the CBI time to respond to Kavitha's plea. However, the Special Judge for ED and CBI cases, Kaveri Baweja, declined to grant interim relief to K Kavitha.

Subsequently, Rana informed the press via PTI that although the court did not rescind the order, it is expected that the investigating agency would abstain from executing it until K Kavitha's plea is adjudicated upon by the judge as per judicial protocol.
