Delhi relief camps submerged as Yamuna river floods, Arvind Kejriwal highlights ongoing threat
Delhi Floods: The situation in Delhi continues to deteriorate as the Yamuna River breaches its banks, leading to widespread flooding in the national capital. As a result, relief shelters established for evacuees have also gone under water, exacerbating the plight of those seeking refuge.
Delhi is grappling with an unprecedented crisis as the rising waters of the Yamuna River submerge streets and homes. In response, the government has set up temporary shelters in various parts of Delhi. Unfortunately, some of these relief camps have also succumbed to flooding, adding to the difficulties faced by the evacuees.
The Yamuna Bazar relief camp in Old Delhi, for instance, is now entirely submerged, forcing people to relocate to drier grounds. Around 27,000 individuals have registered to reside in the approximately 2,700 established centers, according to official reports.
The scenes within these shelters are chaotic, with people crammed together in cramped spaces, struggling with limited belongings. Basic necessities such as food and water are in short supply, causing distress among the evacuees. Some individuals have managed to salvage items like charpoys (traditional beds) from their flooded homes, but overall conditions remain dire.

While water levels in the Yamuna River have started receding slowly, parts of Delhi remain inundated due to open flood gates at a barrage on the swollen river. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal acknowledged the gradual retreat of the river but emphasized that the flood threat persists until heavy rainfall subsides. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have engaged in a blame game, with each accusing the other of responsibility for the flood-like situation in Delhi.
The AAP has alleged a conspiracy against the people of Delhi, pointing fingers at the BJP governments in Haryana and at the center. In response, the BJP criticized the AAP, highlighting that while the party alleges conspiracies, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal remains sheltered in comfort, making appropriate decisions from the confines of his air-conditioned chamber.
Delhi is facing an unprecedented flooding crisis as the Yamuna River inundates the city, resulting in the submersion of relief camps and widespread displacement. Immediate measures are required to ensure the well-being of evacuees, provide essential supplies, and address the ongoing flood threat.
