Govt warns OTT platforms, social media to enforce age-based content control
PTC Web Desk: The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued a directive to social media platforms and OTT websites, urging them to strictly adhere to the Code of Ethics under the IT Rules (2021). The ministry emphasised the need for self-regulation and the implementation of "access control for 'A' rated content" to prevent children from being exposed to inappropriate material.
The advisory comes in the wake of controversy surrounding podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as 'BeerBiceps guy,' over allegedly obscene remarks made during an episode of the stand-up comedy show India's Got Latent on YouTube. The government ordered the removal of the episode following multiple complaints regarding explicit content.
In its notification, the ministry highlighted concerns over the increasing spread of "obscene, pornographic, and vulgar content" by some publishers of online curated content. The government reminded OTT platforms that they are legally bound to refrain from transmitting any prohibited material and must strictly follow age-based classification rules. Additionally, self-regulatory bodies overseeing OTT content are required to ensure compliance with these ethical guidelines.
The issue also gained traction in the Supreme Court, which recently questioned the government about steps being taken to regulate explicit online content. A Bench led by Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh took a strong stance on the matter while hearing a plea from Allahbadia, who sought to consolidate multiple FIRs filed against him. The court warned that if necessary action is not taken, it would intervene to prevent the misuse of digital platforms.
The Supreme Court remarked, “We will not leave this vacuum unaddressed. If the government does not act, we will.” The Union of India has been made a party in the case, and further developments are expected as the government considers additional measures to regulate content on OTT and social media platforms.
